A Purl in the Ocean, sans Oyster

Purl_under_water Last night it began to rain around 6:30, and by 10:00 p.m. the street and water mains were overflowing with water. Next. my backyard began to fill , and before long, three feet of water had collected outside the doors and windows and then, yes, it came pouring in everywhere - into my office/craft studio/basement. What a mess. We spent the night bailing water, and today, throwing away all the floating flotsum, moving my office and saving yarn. Then came the phone calls to the City, the insurance company, the guys who said they waterproofed the basement - and the clean up crews.  It looks like the carpet has to be ripped out, walls repaired, and who else knows what.

Not sure how much blogging I'll be doing this week. But I'll try to come up for air long enough to say hello.

Twisted Facts

Fact: Crochet_purseThis purse is on sale at Nordstrom's for $178.00.

Fact: I don't want to spend $178.00 for it.

Fact: I want to make it myself.

Fact:  It will end up costing more than $178.00 to make.

Fact: The end product that I make will not look anywhere as good as this one, that is perfectly knit and lined and has a zipper.

Fact: I don't care, I'm going to make it anyway.

Fact: I'll be proud of myself that I didn't buy it.

Fact: I'll probably use it once or twice.

Fact: Knowing that last fact, I shouldn't bother to make it.

Fiction: O.K. I won't.

PS - I tried a little mini sampler from some wool that I bought last year. August_010 It came out kind of cute, but it won't work for the bag above. Fact: I'm off to buy the cashmere.

A Record Goes Up in Flames

Burningneedles A few days ago, newspapers in South Africa announced that a bookkeeper named Alta Tucker had broken the national record as the fastest knitter by knitting 178 stitches in 3 minutes. The previous record was 162 stitches. That's pretty damn fast.  But Alta probably won't need to be jetting to the UK in October for the World Competition, because (get this) the world record is 255 stitches in 3 minutes.

So, I tried it. And I'll be damned if my needles didn't burst into flames.

Not.

The best I could do was 80 stitches in 3 minutes - using cashmere on Addi's.

I didn't want to get on an airplane anyway.

Do you believe in Magic??

Edwardscissorhands Yesterday's Dunkin D Coffee Cozy ended up on double pointed needles because I just didn't feel the magic of the Magic Loop.

It was my first attempt at it, and having seen other do it, I was anxious to learn it myself. It sure looks fun, and using 4 DPNs always makes me feel like Edward Scissorhands.  Unfortunately, it didn't go well. It might have been because I was using #2 needles which I am not very acostumed to. (I've spent the summer on #15's making loopy shawls.) The problem was that I kept making an extra stitch or a hole at the beginning of each round because of holding the yarn like a yarn over.

If you want to learn how to do the Loop, I am sure someone at your local yarn shop can teach you. There are many resources online, too, although I have trouble learning unless someone shows me how to do it a few times up close and personal.

I know I'll try it again soon. Especially because it seems like a great way to knit socks. There's even a way to knit two socks on one magic loop.Frootloops_1 How loopy is that???

America Runs on Knitting

DdWhile shawls and vests lay wait, I worked feverishly on a coffee cozy. It wasn't totally frivolous. I learned how to create The Magic Loop,(with the help of Major Knitter) but ended up switching to double pointeds.(I'll tell you why tomorrow.) I also saw this as an exercise in training for what some time this winter will be my first sock.

I didn't use a pattern, but since I wanted a well-dressed styrofoam, I chose Koigu Merino (superwash) and size 2 needles. I measure the circumference (not pi, Reg) and even I could figure out if the cup was 8 inches around and my gauge was 7 st/in, I should cast on 56 stitches. I cast on 50 just so that it would stretch nicely. I also measured the top of the cup which is 2 inches wider so I figured that between the top and the bottom I'd need to add 14 (I made it 10) stitches and I had 3.5 inches in which to do that. (Ok - that was kinda boring - Maybe I'll write up the pattern.Dunkin1 )

By the by, for those playing along, I washed out a DD cup and filled it with coffee from my Keurig.

Everything is FAIR game

Sheep As the summer winds down, knitters will turn their thoughts to attending the Fall Sheep and Wool festivals. Yes,  from California to Vermont and everywhere in between, we fanatics will flock to familiar fairgrounds to get our fill of fiber. I went to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival last year and came home with a carload of stuff (including a border collie - but that's another story) There's nothing like that shot of adrenaline that hits you as you leave your house at 6 a.m. Your heart begins to pound as you aproach the parking area. And then, like crazed hunters, its off to capture The Big Game. Moving from one vendor's stall to the next, secretly hoping that we will come upon some one-of-a-kind handspun long before anyone else. And when all is said and done, we make it home: tired, broke and sporting a new loom,  a dog. or something else that will need to be returned to its breeder. But that's another story.

Lion Brand Yarn has posted a complete list of festivals.[Click Here]

Who's Giving Me The Finger?

BlueprintoI hate "shoulds". I frequently "should" on myself, as in "I should finish that project before starting another." 'I should wind all the skeins - not just one." The fact is, there aren't that many things that we should should ourselves about. I should eat better. I should call my mom. But I have a basic knitting query to put out here, mindful that there aren't any hard and fast knitting-shoulds. Here's the question:

Should your right index finger push on the point of your left knitting needle to advance the yarn, or is this just a 25-year old bad habit? Is that a common thing to do; SHOULD I try and stop? Is it ok to do it every few stitches, and if so, how many is a few?

I didn't even realize I was doing it until Mr. Pointer got injured in a kitchen incident and I couldn't use it.  I know its not that important an issue, and I SHOULD have a better question. But we can just get to the point, and then we SHOULD move on.

Snakes on a Sweater!

Snakesandplanes_1 If I found myself on a plane with snakes, I guess I wouldn't be too happy especially since I have been stripped of all my cosmetics and moisturizer, and probably feeling a little scaley myself. But the snakes that are a problem for me are all those little  ones that pop out of my finished work as ends that I thought I had so nicely woven in. I usually weave in about 1 or 2 inches, in and out and through the finished work, even splitting the ends of yarn and weaving in smaller ends. But no matter what I do, the ends just end up rearing their ugly little heads. Any suggestions?

Knit's My Birthday

Bcake Thanks for stopping by today. It's my birthday. And yes, I found the picture of the knitted cake on EBAY.

Cakes After this weekend of indulging, I plan to stick with only cakes that come from my knittin' sticks.

Making a case for new needles.

Knitpicksneedles My Knit Picks Options Needles just arrived and they are very cool. I put off buying Denise Interchangeables for years even though they looked like fun and everyone said they were great for traveling. But those are plastic needles, which I just can't use. The Knit Pick's are nice stainless needles and they come in a nice binder. You can buy different length length cables, and there are these end caps which you can use to turn the circulars into straight flexible needles or to cap off the end of works-in-progress if you want to use the needles on another project.

Looks like I can start 9 new projects immediately.
