A Wing and A Prayer

Jal Time flies. Been so busy there's not a stitch to report. I think I am actually back to knitting a wash cloth.

Hoping to start some Spring projects some time soon.

Thankfully the real work has been very busy, and that has also given me little time to focus on my other project of Gettin' Knit Together. I've guess I've learned it's pretty hard to support two kids on your own, have a real job and try and launch a product in your basement- AND STILL HAVE TIME TO KNIT ALL THE TIME, FOR GOD SAKE!!

So, the GKT biz is going to have to take another tack. After mustering up the nerve, I pitched it to a notions manufacturer and PRAISE THE LORD - they've agreed to take it over to their corporate headquarters in Japan to check it out. It's winging its way there as we speak. I heard they even bumped the YARN MINDER up to first class! All I can say is "DOMO ARIGATO, MR. ROBATO!"

Who knows, right?

Many hands make enlightened work.

AllhandsFor most of us, knitting truly is a spiritual practice. Something we do with our hands to connect us to our hearts and minds. I really enjoyed my practice of knitting hand warmers and gloves this winter. It gave me everything I like about knitting. First, immediate gratification. Oooo, I finished the wrist. Hooray, there's the thumb. Yippee.. a finger. Next: you can finished a project in less than a week. Ok, I guess that's actually more immediate gratification.  Also, you get a lot of use out of what you make. It's not like a sweater that sits in the closet and I bet I'll use them for years to come. mmm? I guess that's more like long-term gratification. Let's see, what else? Oh, people comment alot on them - ego gratification?  And you can churn 'em out. Obsessive compulsive gratification. AH, knitting - the road to enLightenment.

Red Letter Day

Redgloves Oh, I know it's the Ides of March and Et Tu, Brute and all that - but the Red Letter of the day for me is the completion of my red cashmere gloves to match my red cashmere sampler scarf. I really took my time with these. It was a 4 ply cashmere and I knit them on size 4 needles. I swear, they almost look like store bought gloves. And they are soooo warm.

I have to say, I love the glove.

A double caper....

NoroponchoI wrote an article for an upcoming issue of Yarn Market News, (with much of your input) called "I'll Have What She's Having" - about being inspired by the people around us - or in my case, never having an original idea so I just make whatever my friends are knitting. So, since Regina has been making these small capelets, I've been making these small capelets. And since Regina's been using Noro Silk Garden and running Kidsilk Haze with it, I've been using Silk Garden and Kidsilk Haze. So, there you have it. Its very easy and fast. There are capelet patterns all over the internet. I'm going to work on Regina to create a pattern with these two yarns so email me if you're interested. I added a little double crochet along the bottom.Brownsheepcapelet I also made one up in Brown Sheep Nature's Spectrum which is warmer and pretty but the drape isn't half as nice.

I'm thinking of trying it in a lighter fiber and color that will take me into the Spring, make a silk/wool blend - mmm, maybe a cashmere....

Beautiful One

Emily_bday_1 I usually don't indulge my personally life, too much, but I wanted to capture for posterity - with the blog date, the beginning of Beautiful One's second decade! Here she is with the blue topaz, diamond and white gold pretty (small) ring her mama bought her to mark the moment and match her eyes. Ain't she a looker?

Happy birthday, darlin'!

Let's Spring Forward!!

Jensbooty I had fun putting together this little pre-Spring bouquet for my pal Jenn for her birthday. I rolled up the newest issue of Knit Simple from which I plucked a simple shawl pattern and filled it with skeins of a nice cotton classic and some silk flowers. Spring has to be in the air someplace!

She did pretty well from the rest of the gang, too. We do good birthdays.Jensbooty2

BTW, if you know of anybody with a birthday coming up, I've got a Spring Fling going on for Gettin' Knit Together Kits.  Red Hot Deal going on at $19.99. Watch out - QVC!!!

Don't forget to change your clocks - and put new batteries in your smoke detectors!!

Are you a Fashion-knista?

Michael3 I've been so crazed with work these last two weeks - I haven't knit a stitch! - And one of the things that I'm buried with is an article I'm writing for the next issue of Yarn Market News. It's about whether knitters care what's happening in the world of fashion.  I've been doing a lot of research and I've learned that lots of designers like Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney and Michael Kors are putting more luxury sweaters in their collections because women want more unstructured, comfortable garments. And because more designers are creating these fashions, more mills are making lux yarns and that means that eventually luxury yarns will become more affordable. I didn't know that. But I certainly can't wait for THAT to happen.

But for the most part, I don't pay much attention to what's happening in high-fashion knitwear. I guess I am exposed to the patterns that are shown in Vogue Knitting and the other knitting mags, but I tend to stick to basic shapes, styles and colors.   I spoke to Adina Klein today (she's the editor at Vogue) and she told me that off-white/cream-colored yarn is always the top selling color no matter what yarn it comes out in. I didn't know that. But it does explain why I have four cream-colored cardigans.

So, for the next several posts, I hope you won't mind weighing in with some of your opinions.

Here's my question for today: to what extent does what's happening on the runways influence what you knit and if so, where do you go to get your insight into style and trends?
