Amy Tan Meets Steel Magnolias

Did you hear about this?  There's going to be a movie coming out next year about a group of women who get together every week to knit and share stories about their lives!!  It's a runaway blockbuster, right?? So, who should star in such a sure-fire Oscar nod?? That's right - Julia Roberts!! I mean, don't all knitters look like Julia Roberts (knitters ass aside.)

Based on a soon-to-be published novel with the same name, The Friday Night Knitter's Club, centers around a Manhattan yarn shop owner and single mom with a zany teenage daughter. I hear that tragedy strikes and the women find out that they all can get through it - together - one stitch at a time.

I bet there won't be a dry sock in the house. Gee - I can't believe one of us didn't think of this.

Ok. Wait.

What about the story of a young crocheter - a hooker, actually, who gets hired for the weekend by a handsome Lion Brand Salesman to make him an afghan? Julia

What about Erin Berroccovitch - the story of an legal assistant who brings down a yarn company for adding acrylic fiber to their organic wool?

I'll think of something...just you wait...

Up a Tree without a Pattern

Darryl Some of you probably remember that Darryl Hannah made a big splash back in 2003 in Vogue Knitting. [ok - is it weird that I still have my copy ? Does anyone else save all their magazines? ]  At the time she was making scarves, hoping to graduate to bigger and better things. So, yesterday, she had to be physically removed by police from a walnut tree in a community garden in LA protesting against its demolition to make room for a warehouse. The reports say she guarded the tree for 23 days - most of it spent 40 feet up in its branches. Now, this is surely only something a knitter could and would do. Give me a good cause and a place to sit, a pair of sticks and a ball of yarn and just try and make me move!Treesweater

An artist named Carol Hummel must have gone out of her tree to make this arborist artwork.

Now maybe I'm barking up the wrong one, but perhaps, you too are ready to branch out with this little tree sweater number.

You can find the pattern at Red Shirt Knitting.

It all goes to show that while money doesn't grown on 'em, nuts definitely do.
