Age - It's a Magical Illusion

Mesolo_copy It's not everyday you get to wear a tiara or dress up like a Fairy Princess - but yesterday I celebrated the leap into my 50th year (or completion thereof) by throwing a wonderful party for about 34 woman friends. Signgif

To go with my illusion theme, in the center of the room were three wishing bowls where guests could thrown the shining pennies they were provided. And in lieu of gifts, I asked everyone to bring me a wish! From pictures of beach houses to an amazing deck of cards with 50 original wishes -- to poems and songs written just for me, my friends all came through with the most creative and loving thoughts.

I'll share more pictures if you want to see 'em.

And magically, I might even start knitting again, and blogging. It's one of my greatest wishes for this coming year!

The Plenty Part

I've posted recently that I haven't been blogging because I haven't been knitting, True. I also haven't read a knitting blog in about 4 months. But this morning, I woke up early and decided to do so. And I remembered something! Many knitting blogs are barely about knitting. They are about the knitter's life, with a little picture thrown in, like "Oh, by the way, this is what I was knitting when I redid my bathroom." Now, all last year, I really prided myself on "sticking to the knitting", and for the most part, I did. Of course, I also went on a lot about my Gettin' Knit Togather Kit - but I think I kept my personal life pretty personal. [O.K. I mentioned Beautiful One and Beautiful, Too a few time, true, but they were probably modeling a FO.]

So, while my knitting has slowed for awhile, what I thought I might try is not be so rigid and share with you a little of "the plenty". After all, the blog is called Knit AND Plenty. And right now I've got PLENTY of plenty.

My 20 year old daughter (Beautiful One) has moved into NYC for the summer with her BF; the 17 year old is away for the summer as a Camp Counseler leaving me to be an empty nester for the first time in my life. My relationship with my guy of five years ended at the end of March and now I'm on Match.com which might just kill you if I tell you THOSE stories. I'm turning 50 in August - (yeah, I know, I don't write like it ;-) ) and I'm planning a party for 30 or so women. I live a rich, full life and there might by something to share along the way. You can always cut the RSS cord, right? I promise I'll throw in a picture of a sock now and again. And maybe even some pictures of other stuff. Like me! Below is a picture of me golfing. Now, there's a treat, huh?

I hope you will give this part a whirl with me.

Rows and rows of prayers

Candles I haven't blogged in weeks and had intended to tell you why and all about it on Monday, but with all that happened in Virginia yesterday, for now I just want to add my voice to the great web of prayers that go out to the families of all the victims and to all of those touched by yet another tragedy.

I, for one, think that guns DO kill people - and we have to stop selling them to the people who use them.

Beautiful One

Emily_bday_1 I usually don't indulge my personally life, too much, but I wanted to capture for posterity - with the blog date, the beginning of Beautiful One's second decade! Here she is with the blue topaz, diamond and white gold pretty (small) ring her mama bought her to mark the moment and match her eyes. Ain't she a looker?

Happy birthday, darlin'!

Flash. Trash. Stash. Cash.

I am a big believer that good things can often happen even from the worst of events. It was that cockeyed optimism that kept me sane when a flash flood caused two feet of water to enter my studio office at the end of August. It pretty much destroyed the carpet, the walls, lots of papers and photos, stored clothing - and luckily, not too much else that couldn't be replaced. And yes, I quickly salvaged all the yarn and got it to higher ground. Rhinebeck_016 [Here it is all piled up in my den.]

Now, after three months, a new tile floor and some fresh paint, I decided to have my very own yarn shop-style storage built as a way to try and keep my yarn and my yarn buying under control. Ain't it sweet?

1108 I sorted everything by color and aside from being a bit shocked by seeing it all in one place and realizing just how much there is, I think it is going to actually be very helping in getting me to use what I have more effectively. By the way, the black suitcases there on the left are also filled with yarn - mostly the stuff I would like to forget I ever bought. One of my close knit friends asked if she could shop my stash.  "Of course!" I quickly replied, "More money for yarn!!!" (oops!)

The Necks Craze

Stitches_005 One of the highlights of my Stitches trip, was sitting down to lunch with Karin Strom, editor of Yarn Market News. She, Regina and I cast on and on for over an hour about what's hot and what's not in the fiber world. Thank goodness socks will still be hot for a little while longer since I just learned how to make them. However, in all likelihood, I probably will miss the Victorian Lace Shawl craze. I'm just not that quick.  Karin's a creative and talented woman who really knows her stuff. She was even smart enough to get me to write an article for their January issue. ;-) Isn't that a stitch??

More loot revealed:

So, we all know that I am up to my neck in yarn, right?   So what could be better than 250 yards ofStitches_001 a Blue Heron Bulky Chenille Rayon called Summer Meadow. I picked up a pattern to make a small ruffled collar/neck wrap. It's going to be incredible.

Stitch or Treat

PumpkinsI'm sure, by now, you've all knitted up your pumpkin hats or felted a pumpkin patch. I barely got to the store to buy the yucky bag of Bit O Honeys. I buy those because they are just about the only candy that I won't eat. (Neither will any of the kids who come to the door.) Sorry to say but I'm not a big Halloween fan. Mind you, I don't turn off all the lights in the house (hi, pop!) and I really do like seeing the little ones - but it's not a biggy for me.It is, however, a great excuse to sit by the door and KNIT - and isn't that what really matters??

Now, Here are my Top Ten Ways To Know You are Too Old to Trick or Treat10. You get winded from kno

10. You pass any house that requires climbing steps to the door.
9. You plan to hire somebody to chew the candy for you.
8. You are only looking for high fiber treats.
7. Instead of collecting for UNICEF, you're collecting for your IRA
6. People say, "Great Cruella Deville mask!" and you're not wearing one.
5. When the door opens you yell, "Trick or..." and can't remember the rest.
4. By the end of the night, you have a bag full of restraining orders.
3. People can't guess that you're the Lipitor Fairy.
2. You're the only Dora the Explorer in the neighborhood with a
walker.
1. You avoid going to houses where your ex-husbands live.

Happy Halloween!

Hooray for Yarnold!

C8yarnold_s Today marks a huge victory -(with our children and our children's children as the winners) - for environmental protection as California's Governator signed into law a bill that will reduce emission of green house gases. Truthfully, Arnie's election was a bit too Hollywood/Reaganesque for my taste- and I was grateful (and hopeful) that he had a strong democratic wife in his corner, in his bed, and in his ear. So, I applaud him for making this bold move. I hope other states will follow suit.

After all, if the temperature of the planet continues to rise, we can forget about knitting sweaters and hats and gloves and scarves and heavy socks.  We'd be doomed to lacy shawls and such, and I'd have to lay down the sticks for good.

Maybe I'll knit up some matching cuffs.

September_010_1Saturday morning, my Close Knit Friends all showed up for a morning of knitting. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be joining them. I was on my way to Stanford, New York - about 2++ hours from my home to spring both Bill and my car from the lock-up. You see, he borrowed my Audi to drive to a baseball weekend with the guys, and although I warned him that the car goes faster than you think, he got pulled over for going 70 in a 55 mph zone. Mind you, it was 6 a.m and there was no one else on the Taconic. No one, that is, except for Bill... and State Trooper Stekl. Happydays

"License and registration, please. Please stay in the vehicle."

What happened next is that the kind officer ran Bill's license against the NY database, and it came up that he had (INADVERTENTLY) not paid a ticket from 2000. Well, out came the handcuffs and the drug-sniffing very large German Shepherd to do a once around the car - and off they went to the State Barracks and off my car went on a flat bed to the car pokey. Next events: phone call to me, me in car, tick-tock, 2 hours, pay fine, wait to get the car, tick tock, arrive home. Oh, yes, we did have a lovely little lunch at a place so aptly named The Happy Days Cafe.

Needless to say, a good time was had by all. And it inspired me to start a new sweater:

Red, white and very blue.

Knitted_flagI definitely felt blue today. For all of us living near NYC, not only were we aware of what today was, but we also, literally, felt it in the air. The blue sky, the bright sunshine, that crisp breeze.  It was the morning of September 11th. We were all there again. But five years ago, in our sadness, and horror and disbelieve, we clung to each other; called loved ones just to tell them we loved them; said hello to a stranger, and to paraphrase a great comment I heard, "We were no longer afro-americans or hispanic-americans or even native americans. On that day, we lost our hyphens." It's too bad that it requires such tragedy for people to come together, and that it takes such little time for us all to go back to our old divided ways.

So, today, hug your kids, tip the folks at the Dunkin, pray for peace, or why not knit a flag.
